Pernell Whitaker vs Jake Rodriguez
WBC welterweight title
Atlantic City, New Jersey
Pernell Whitaker, the then 147lb champion, was coming to the end of his prime years but was still a force to be reckoned with for any fighter both at 147 and 154. After spendng the majority of his career practicing the fine art of defensive boxing he was intent on becoming a more effective puncher and out to prove that he had the power to go with his quick feet, body and hands. Jake Rodriguez was the former 140lb champion having lost his belt to a young Kostya Tsyzu a few fights previous. He had also taken a future Whitaker opponent 10 ronds early on in his career by the name of Felix Trinidad. He often flirted with 147lbs and caught a big break by securing a fight against Whitaker. Not the most jawdropping fight there is but one of the most clinical and vicious performances of Whitaker's career. Enjoy!
