Lester Ellis vs Barry Michael
IBF super featherweight title
Lester Ellis, the British born Australian & undefeated IBF super featherweight champion, was seen as a fighter on the rise having won the strap in only his 15th pro fight by defeating then champion Hwan-Kil Yuh. Having defended against tough filipino Rod Sequenan he was then matched up against a fellow British born Australian in Barry Michael. Michael had been in the game for 12 years having racked up over 50 pro fights but never once winning or even challenging for a World title. This was very much seen as Michael's one and only shot at the big time, and for Ellis it was seen as another title defence against a tough journeyman. Hyped up to the maximum for the Australian public it had widespread coverage all over the country. What happened on the night not only lived up to the hype, but exceeded expectations and IMO is one of the best fights ever to take place on Australian soil. Enjoy!
